With the aim to create more value for our customers by combining our ship power solutions expertise with ship design knowledge, we entered the field of ship design at the end of 2006 with the acquisition of SCHIFFKO GmbH, now Wärtsilä Ship Design Germany GmbH.
The company, established in 1955 and located on the banks of the river Elbe in downtown Hamburg, has played a pioneering role throughout its history, resulting in many inventions, innovative solutions and new techniques. Our main activities today are ship design and marine consultancy.
Ship design
Wärtsilä provides designs for merchant, offshore and special vessels. Examples of merchant ship designs are our SCHIFFKO CV 1100, SCHIFFKO CV 1300, SCHIFFKO CV 1800 and SCHIFFKO CV 7300 container vessels. Pipe-laying vessels and pipe-laying barges, as well as offshore construction vessels, are amongst our most recent references for offshore vessel designs. Our latest special vessel designs include a revolutionary icebreaking research vessel and an innovative jack-up for the installation of offshore windmills.

We provide initial design (general arrangement drawings and related documents) and basic design (classification drawings and related documents), and can also provide detail design (production drawings and related documents).
Wärtsilä covers the full range of ship design disciplines, thus including ship theory, structural engineering, accommodation and outfitting, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, navigation and communication. We are always interested to attract new talent in these disciplines. Currently open positions can be found in the careers section of this website.
Marine consultancy
Wärtsilä provides a comprehensive range of marine consultancy services to ship owners who intend to engage, or have already engaged in a newbuilding contract with a shipyard.
Examples of consultancy services provided to ship owners prior to the signing of a newbuilding contract are the performance of technical and commercial feasibility studies, the creation of conceptual ship designs, the preparation of full tender documentation, and the technical and commercial evaluation of shipyard offers.
Plan approval, design optimization and onsite newbuilding supervision are examples of consultancy services provided to ship owners after the signing of a newbuilding contract.
