Condition based maintenance for the offshore industry
Save money and increase availability with CBM. Wärtsilä was the first engine manufacturer to get a CBM contract within the offshore industry.

Conditioned Based Maintenance (CBM) programmes penetrates new market segments. Wärtsilä was the first engine manufacturer to sign a CBM contract with an offshore company.

Every installation has its own unique operating environment which influences the maintenance programme. This can include factors such as an operation profile, fuel type, load pattern, ambient conditions and many other factors.

CBM is intelligent maintenance

Get maximum value out of the money you invest in maintenance. CBM has for long been used in other industries as a way of adding value to maintenance efforts. A CBM program will increase your prospects of saving money.

When using the CBM program it is possible to take an ‘intelligent maintenance’ approach. This means evaluating the exact condition of individual engines on a real-time basis. The CBM program takes the actual operating conditions into account, instead of basing maintenance decisions on a set schedule. "This will lead to savings for the customers who are then able to change parts intelligently and extracting maximum value from those parts", says Mr Johan Pellas, Manager for Condition-Based Maintenance at Wärtsilä’s Technical Service department.

Under the terms of a CBM contract, engine operating data is continuously transmitted from installations to Wärtsilä’s analysis centre in Finland which provide regular reports on maintenance needs, based on established guidelines and specific operating conditions. Parts can then be pre-ordered and stocked in advance, reducing rush delivery costs.

First offshore drilling CBM

Wärtsilä has existing CBM contracts on Wärtsilä power plants and ships at approximately 100 installations globally, but now CBM is also entering the offshore market. We are the first engine manufacturer in the world to sign a CBM contract within the offshore drilling industry.

Johan Pellas says: "For every power and marine application it is important to improve profitability and ensure a high level of availability. A planned approach to Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) is the solution for today’s energy producers and users." Cost savings and increased availability, in combination with the easy and automatic transfer of data from installations to a CBM centre, will make the concept even more attractive in years to come."
