Wärtsilä wins power award in Asia

Power Project of the Year

Alf Doktar (to the right), Regional Director Power Plants Sales, Asia, accepted the Asian Power Award on behalf of Wärtsilä.Wärtsilä won the ‘Power Project of the Year’ award at the annual Asian Power awards in Singapore on 14 September 2005. This award was presented for Wärtsilä’s innovative gas conversion of a power plant at the Century Paper and Board Mill in Pakistan.

The power plant, owned by Century Power Generation Ltd (CPGL), supplies power and heat to one of Pakistan’s largest paper and board mills. It has been converted from burning heavy fuel oil (HFO) to burning light fuel oil (LFO) and gas in a dual-fuel (DF) specification.

Both the customer and the environment benefit from this DF conversion since the price of gas is lower and gas is a cleaner fuel than HFO. Pakistan is a booming market for gas and dual-fuel engines as gas is becoming readily available as an alternative to HFO. The Pakistan government is encouraging gas-based power generation, and power companies are either replacing HFO engines with gas or dual-fuel engines or converting them.

These were the first ever ‘Asian Power’ awards. The awards are aimed at recognizing the broad spectrum of Asia’s power supply industry and acknowledging the vital input from all elements of this industry.

As the base material for the panel’s consideration, the Asian Power magazine’s editorial team used the press releases sent to Asian Power and stories published in Asian Power magazine. The judging was based on the value of an individual company’s input and contribution to Asia’s developing power supply industries.

The awards ceremony was held at the prestigious China Club in Singapore and was attended by some 70 persons from award winners and other interested parties.

The Asian Power awards are organized and funded solely by the publishers of Asian Power magazine, Charlton Media Group. The awards are independent of any outside influence or participation.
