OVDS (Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab ASA) of Norway owns a number of cruise vessels that take passagers on an 11-day Norwegian coastal voyage, better known as 'Hurtigruten' (or 'Fast Route'). Since 1893 ships have plied the 1352 nautical miles between Bergen and Kirkenes and today MS Finnmarken is the most luxurious cruise vessel on this route.
Wärtsilä solution
The Finnmarken is driven by two shaftlines. Each has a Wärtsilä 9L32 main engine with an output of 4140 kW each. This is located ahead of the Wärtsilä TCH 150V85-S50 reduction gearbox. Each shaftline also has a Wärtsilä 6L32 engine mounted aft of the gearboxes which can be coupled either to their own generators or to the main gears.
