The Wärtsilä RT-flex84T and RTA84T low-speed marine diesel engines are tailor-made for the economical propulsion of very large crude oil tankers (VLCCs and ULCCs) up to more than 300,000 dwt.
In this role, they offer clear and substantial benefits:
The parameters of the Wärtsilä RTA84T are based on the needs of VLCC newbuildings. For example, a VLCC of 285,000 dwt needs an average installed power of around 27,000 kW for a ship’s service speed of 15.5 knots.
The usually selected propeller speed of some 70 to 79 rpm is a direct result of aiming for an ‘optimum propulsion’ installation within the widely accepted MARPOL recommendation for the selection of propeller diameters.
The RT-flex84T engines have additional benefits:
-
Smokeless operation at all running speeds
-
Better fuel economy in the part-load range
-
Lower steady running speeds
-
Reduced maintenance requirements with simpler engine setting and extendable
