Common rail

Smokeless engines with the common-rail system
The common-rail systems for Wärtsilä medium-speed and Wärtsilä RT-flex low-speed engines are necessarily different in execution, but provide similar benefits.
Common rail engines
For medium-speed engines, common rail is standard on the Wärtsilä 46F engine and available for the Wärtsilä 32Wärtsilä 38 and Wärtsilä 46 engines. Common rail is also continuously being developed for additional Wärtsilä engines. The common-rail system design is optimized for new engines but it can also be retrofitted to existing engines.

Common rail is also available in low-speed engines. It is standard in the Wärtsilä RT-flex50-BRT-flex58T-BRT-flex60C-BRT-flex68-D, RT-flex82C, RT-flex82TRT-flex84T-D, and RT-flex96C engine types in the current programme.

Benefits of common rail

  • Smokeless operation at all speeds and loads
  • Superior combustion by keeping the fuel injection pressure at optimum level
  • Lower and stable running speeds
  • Reduced fuel consumption at part load
