The core function of a reduction gearbox is to reduce the main engine speed to the optimum propeller speed. Wärtsilä gears have been designed to meet the highest standards of operational efficiency and reliability with low noise and vibration.
Wärtsilä gears can be supplied with built-in multidisc clutches, featuring:
- Single-input, single-output gears with vertical or horizontal offsets of the shafts
- Twin-input, single-output gears with up to 3.8m horizontal offsets
Power take-off arrangements
- Over 90% of gearbox deliveries include built-in PTO for shaft generators
- In standardized solutions the PTO is running also when the propeller has been disconnected
- Customized solutions, including secondary driven, twin-, and two-speed PTOs, are also available
Auxiliary propulsion drive for increased safety
- Possibility to utilize power from auxiliary engines as back-up for the main engine
- Standard gearbox with multidisc clutch is supplied with an additional disconnecting coupling between gear and main engine
- Can also be used for operation modes with low vessel speeds
Integrated or separate hydraulic system for gear and CP propeller
-
Most gears designed with integrated hydraulic system for gear and CPP
-
Reduced installation costs for shipyard and operational costs for owner
-
For safety reasons the gear mechanically drives the main pump for propeller
-
Gears can be interfaced to a separate hydraulic power unit
