Wärtsilä Rudders

Wärtsilä Rudders

Wärtsilä rudders have an impact on the total propulsive efficiency, i.e. the fuel consumption, of a ship. There is a strong interaction between hull, propeller and rudder. Optimum performance is achieved with the Wärtsilä efficiency rudder, which integrates the propeller and the rudder. It reduces fuel consumption, vibration and noise level compared to traditional design.

Wärtsilä efficiency rudders are in successful operation on many vessels, safely manoeuvring the ships with minimum need for fuel at maximum comfort level. At high vessel speeds and high power the risk of cavitation erosion is also reduced. In general a noise reduction of 3 to 6 dB is expected.

Twin-screw vessels:

  • Fuel saving of 2 to 6%. Efficiency gain increase with increasing hub ratio,
    i.e. propeller hub/propeller diameter ratio
  • About 25% reduction in propeller induced vibration

Single-screw vessels:

  • Controllable pitch propellers: Fuel saving of minimum 5%
  • Fixed pitch propellers: Fuel saving of minimum 3%
  • 30 to 45% reduction of propeller induced vibration level
