Technology for two-stroke Wärtsilä RT-flex engines
The RT-flex engine is basically a standard Wärtsilä RTA low-speed engine which depends upon electronically-controlled common-rail systems instead of the usual mechanical camshaft, its gear drive, fuel injection pump units and the related mechanical control gear.
Fuel oil, servo oil and control oil are delivered at regulated pressures to rail pipes along the side of the cylinders. Electronic control units then regulate delivery from these rail pipes to fuel injection and exhaust valve operation.
This system gives complete flexibility in the setting of fuel injection timing, rate, pressure and volume, as well as in exhaust valve operation to give benefits in engine operation which cannot be obtained through mechanically-controlled systems.
