Wenche Steinsbø, Mechanic, Norway

Wenche Steinsbø’s educational background includes two years at a vocational school: one year at a beginning course and one year studying Electrical Engineering.

She joined Wärtsilä in Norway in 1998 as an apprentice and has after that worked as a mechanic for the Ship Service department. Her main tasks are to repair and overhaul engines, reduction gears and propellers.

Wenche's working day starts at 7.00 o’clock. “Our foreman starts by dividing the projects between us and then sends us on board the ships. Normally there are two or more of us working together so it’s quite social. On board the ship we repair and overhaul parts and components. We dismantle engines, gears and propellers and assemble them again. Before the ship leaves we check that everything works properly.”

According to Wenche the atmosphere at her department is very good. “The most important quality for this job is to be able to co-operate with others but also to be able to work independently.”
